Does YouTube promotion work?
Last updated 3 October 2026
It works when the promotion is real advertising and the video can hold attention. Google Ads puts your video in front of people who match an audience you choose; they watch, the watch time lands in your analytics, and the recommendation system reads the same retention data it reads for organic views. What it cannot do is make a video people leave after four seconds perform.
What it reliably produces
Views that appear in your public count and in YouTube Analytics under paid traffic, watch time that counts towards your channel totals, a retention curve built on viewers who are not your subscribers, and an audience breakdown by country, age and device.
Subscribers follow at roughly one per 200 to 400 viewers on well-matched content. That rate is a consequence of the video, not of the campaign.
When it is the wrong spend
If retention drops below 60% at thirty seconds, fix the video first. Advertising a video people leave buys an audience that leaves, and you pay for every one of them.
The honest order is: fix the opening, then promote the video that already holds people, not the newest upload.
