What is audience retention on YouTube?
Last updated 3 October 2026
Audience retention is the share of your video that people actually watch, shown as a curve from start to finish. It is the single most useful diagnostic YouTube gives you, because it shows not just how many people left but exactly where.
What good looks like
A healthy curve drops sharply in the first fifteen seconds, then flattens into a slow decline. The early drop is viewers deciding, and it is normal. What matters is where the curve settles: holding above 40% at the halfway mark is strong for long-form, and any upward bump marks a moment worth repeating.
If the curve falls below 60% at thirty seconds, that is where the work is. Nothing further down the timeline will rescue it.
Why advertisers care
Advertising does not change the shape of the curve. It changes how many people are on it and tests it against a wider audience than your subscribers. A campaign on a video with weak retention buys views that leave; a campaign on a video with strong retention often keeps paying out after the budget stops.
