What are in-stream ads on YouTube?

Last updated 3 October 2026

An in-stream ad plays before, during or after someone else's video. The skippable kind lets the viewer skip after five seconds, and the advertiser is charged only if the viewer watches 30 seconds, finishes a shorter ad, or clicks. It is the format that puts your video in front of people who were not looking for it.

What it suits

Content that earns attention in the first five seconds: music, trailers, anything visual. The viewer did not choose you, so the opening has to do the work before the skip button appears.

It is the cheapest way to reach people at scale, and the retention curve it produces is honest — everyone on it chose to keep watching past the skip.

Against in-feed

In-feed ads appear beside search results and on the home page, so the viewer clicks deliberately. That costs more per view and holds attention better. In-stream buys volume; in-feed buys intent.
