What are watch hours on YouTube?
Last updated 3 October 2026
Watch hours are the total time people spend watching your videos, counted in hours rather than views. YouTube requires 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months, alongside 1,000 subscribers, to join the Partner Programme.
The arithmetic
Four thousand hours is 240,000 minutes. A ten-minute video that holds viewers for four minutes needs 60,000 views to get there. A two-minute video holding them for one minute needs 240,000. Length and retention matter far more than view count.
What does not count
Private and unlisted videos, deleted videos, and watch time from the Shorts feed are all excluded from the 4,000-hour threshold. Check YouTube's own monetisation policy before planning a campaign around it, because the rules on which surfaces qualify have changed more than once.
