What moves RPM

Audience country does most of the work. A channel watched mainly in the US, UK, Canada or Australia can earn three or four times what an identical channel earns from a broader audience, because advertisers bid more for those viewers. Video length matters next, since videos over eight minutes can carry mid-roll ads. Then season: RPM climbs through November and December and drops in January.

Questions

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?+

It depends on the niche and the audience country. Typical RPM ranges run from about $1–3 for music to $8–25 for finance and business. Gaming sits near $2–6 and tech around $4–12.

What is the difference between CPM and RPM?+

CPM is what advertisers pay per thousand impressions. RPM is what lands in your account per thousand views after YouTube's 45% share and unmonetised views are taken out. RPM is the number that matters to a creator.

How much do Shorts pay?+

Far less than long-form. Shorts RPM usually falls between $0.05 and $0.15 per thousand views, which is why Shorts are better used for reach and subscribers than for direct revenue.

Why is my RPM lower than the estimate?+

Audience country is the biggest factor. Views from the US, UK, Canada and Australia earn several times what the same views earn elsewhere. Video length, season and how many viewers skip ads all move it too.

Does paid promotion pay for itself through AdSense?+

Usually not on ad revenue alone. At a $3 RPM a view earns about 0.3 cents while a promoted view costs around 0.6 cents worldwide. Promotion earns its money back through subscribers, higher sponsorship rates and the organic recommendations that follow a campaign.
