Do promoted views count for monetisation?
Last updated 3 October 2026
Views delivered through Google Ads are real views with real watch time, and that watch time appears in your channel totals. Whether a given hour counts towards the 4,000-hour Partner Programme threshold depends on YouTube's definition of qualified public watch time, which has changed more than once — check YouTube's own monetisation policy before planning a campaign around the threshold.
What is clear
The views are public and appear in your view count. The watch time appears in Analytics. The retention data feeds the recommendation system. None of that is in question.
What is worth verifying directly with YouTube, rather than taking from any promotion service, is which surfaces and traffic sources count towards the threshold at the moment you apply. Shorts-feed watch time, for example, is excluded from the 4,000-hour requirement and has its own separate route.
The honest way to plan it
Treat a campaign as a way to find the video that holds attention, then let that video accumulate hours. A ten-minute video holding viewers for four minutes needs 60,000 views to reach 4,000 hours; a two-minute video holding them one minute needs 240,000. Length and retention move that arithmetic far more than ad spend does.
